Sri Krishna Janmashtami and laddoos go hand in hand. This festival has always been special to me and will remain to be so. I usually prepare the traditional laddoos which are prepared in the Tulunad households for this festival. This time, I included another laddoo in the list – Oats Ladoo. I have been using oats for several years now. Having tried various dishes out of oats, wanted to include it in the festive preparations this time.
Wishing all my dear friends a very happy Sri Krishna Janmashtami
Simple to prepare and great to taste, let us look into the simple recipe of Oats Laddoo
Few other Laddoo / Unde recipes :
Undlaka / Sweet rice dumplings
Total time: 35 minutes
Preparation time: 15 minutes
Cooking time: 20 minutes
Makes: 15 (medium sized laddoos)
Ingredients:
Rolled Oats: 1 cup
Rava/Semolina: ¼ cup
Cashew nuts: Few
Kishmish: Few
Cardamom: 5 to 6 (Powdered)
Brown Sugar: ½ cup
Ghee: ½ cup
Method:
• Heat a wide mouthed pan and dry roast rawa / semolina in medium heat for a few minutes or until it turns aromatic. Don’t over roast / burn it. Remove from heat and let it cool
• In the same pan, dry roast rolled oats for about few minutes, say about 5 minutes under medium heat. The rolled oats turn a little crispy. Remove from heat and let it cool
• Once cool, blend in a mixer to make a fine powder
• In a pan, add ghee and the powdered oats. Mix well and heat for about 5 minutes. Now add semolina to it and mix again
• Add sugar, roasted cashew, kishmish and cardamom powder and mix well. Continue heat for another 5 minutes and remove from heat
• Let it cool for about 5 minutes. Meanwhile, grease your palm with ghee and start making small balls when the mixture is warm (Too hot a mixture is difficult to make balls, but if it cools down completely, it will not bind together. So best is to make balls when it is still warm)
• Repeat until the mixture is used up. Let the balls rest for few hours to set before transferring to an airtight container
• The laddoos are ready to relish in a few hours !!!
Note :
- In case you are not able to make balls out of the warm mixture, just add a little more ghee and bring the mixture together
- For my dear friends in Germany, you find oats in almost all super markets with the name ‘ Haferflocken’ along with other breakfast cereals. This recipe calls for the usage of rolled oats, which you may find in the supermarket shelves with the name ‘Kernige Haferflocken’
- A tip for those staying out of India, you may find ghee easily in the nearby Indian store or Turkish store. But if you dont find either of them around you, you may simply prepare ghee by yourself using ‘Irish Butter’ which is easily available in any supermarket around
- For my dear friends in Germany, Rava / Semolina is called as ‘Grieß’ in German and it is easily available in any local supermarket.
Oats Laddoo stories:
Belonging to the Tulu speaking community from the South Kanara belt, I have grown up visiting Sri Krishna temple and worshipping Lord Krishna. Sri Krishna Janmashtami, lord Krishna’s birthday, is celebrated in pomp and grandeur by the people around this region. This festival has remained very special to me -As a kid for the goodies, and later as an admirer and now having been blessed with my little daughter on Sri Krishna Janmashtami, I have all reasons to celebrate this day. Thanks to my dad’s transferable job, we travelled across India and come festivals, mom used to try out dishes from the ingredients which were easily available around. Janmashtami , used to come with a lot of creativity from my mom’s side. I wanted to make our first Sri Krishna Janmashtami in Germany even more special and Oats Laddoo is the outcome.
This janmashtami new add on to the list.. Will try
