Jackfruit Dose(Dosa)

No one can just have enough of jackfruit. There is no dearth of ideas from my daughter… “Mamma, why not prepare jackfruit pulao…”, “Mamma, can you prepare jackfruit ice-cream…”, ”Mamma, we had idli, why not dose…” and the list goes on, some realistic while some born out of sheer imagination. In line with her demand, goes today’s dish – Jackfruit Dose. This recipe is one of the several ways of preparing it – the traditional South Canara style of preparation, called “Pelakkai Rotti” or “Halasina Hannina Rotti”. It’s a very simple, yet yummy recipe. Unlike other dose, which can be prepared on non-stick tawa, I recommend the traditional wrought iron tawa for this particular dose, to get its authentic taste.

Total time: 4.5 hours

Preparation time: 4 hours

  • To the above, add half of the rice and grind to a smooth paste and keep it aside

  • Grind the remaining rice with grated coconut coarsely

  • To the above, add jaggery, carom seeds and salt. Grind smoothly

  • Mix this paste with the batter prepared earlier

  • Preheat the tawa. Sprinkle some ghee and spread it well in the tawa

  • Pour the batter using a ladle and spread it evenly in the tawa

  • Sprinkle some ghee over it, cover the tawa with a lid and let it cook in medium flame for a few minutes

  • As the dose is turning golden burn, flip it and heat the other side for a minute before transferring it to a plate. In between, sprinkle little ghee over the dose

  • Jackfruit Dose is ready to serve. It can be consumed as is, or, you may serve it with honey / butter / ghee.

Note: It is very important to take all the ingredients in the right proportions to get the perfect texture, taste and colour of the dose.

Jackfruit Dose stories:

Being South Indian, Doses and Idlis are among our weekly routine. There are numerous varieties and possibilities of dose and idli, which give us enough options ensuring that we don’t get bored eating the same. One such variety is the jackfruit dose, which is just so yummy. With ghee for topping, the dose tastes heavenly. You may use honey or butter for dip, but the dose tastes good as is, with ghee. Hmm… my mouth started watering as I am writing about it. The best part of this dose is that it doesn’t require fermentation, one just need to soak rice for about 4 hours, grind and prepare!!!
