Traditional Tulunad recipe, ‘Neer Dose’, if translated word to word, means ‘Watery Crepe’.
It is one of the quickest dose variety prepared using rice as there is no fermentation required here. The recipe that I am sharing today is the traditional way of preparing Neer Dose wherein we soak rice for about 2 hours and prepare the batter by grinding this soaked rice.
Well, you can still prepare instant Neer Dose. You may check for the recipe here :
Neer Dose is known for its trademark – Dose with holes and this is also the sign of a perfect Neer Dose. It is traditionally served with any variety of coconut chutney, or sagu, or during the mango season, it is often served with a sweet dish known as – Kukku Rasayana / Mango Rasayana.
I tried an unconventional combination recently where I served the Tulunad Neer Dose with Malay peanut sauce and the fusion rocked!!!
You may try the same. Here is the quick recipe for the Malay peanut sauce:

Quick Video :
- Wash and soak rice in water for about 2 hours
- Grind rice coarsely
- Grind again with coconut to a smooth paste
- To the above, add cumin seeds and little salt and run the mixer for about a second
- Add enough water to make the batter watery
- Pour the batter on the tawa . If you are using a pan / tawa with edges, you may swirl it to spread the batter or else, if using a regular one, carefully pour the batter on it while ensuring that the spread is even.

- Serve it hot with chutney/sagu or any side dish of your choice and liking. As mentioned earlier, during the season of mangoes, nothing can beat the taste of Neer Dose – Mango Rasayana combo
- I tried our traditional Tulunad Neer Dose with the Malay Peanut Sauce – Kuah Kacang, which trust me is no less… Tastes heavenly
Neer Dose Stories:
Neer Dose is one of the most common breakfast dish across the Coastal Karnataka belt. And if it is the season of mangoes, then ‘Neer Dose’ has to be the breakfast every other day, without any doubt!
Well, going a little away from food, the very word ‘Neer Dose’ reminds me of one of my uncle from Mumbai. We hardly knew any of our uncles’ or aunts’ real names as we had christened each of them with unique, off-beat names. And so, we had named this uncle of ours as ‘Neer Dose Doddappa’ – well not because he loved Neer Dose, but for the spotted vest / undershirt which he always wore, that resembled the Neer Dose. Childhood memories you see… Though Neer Dose is such a common affair in our household, when the time came to pen down a story on it, I got flashes of my childhood memories. Interestingly, I also realized that though we meet and connect with a lot of people over social media, I don’t see similar memories being made, the way they did, during our childhood days.
