Home-made chocolates??? I am sure, few of you might recollect your sweet trip to some hill station in India, where there were few exclusive shops selling home-made chocolates.
I too have always wanted to prepare chocolates at home; from scratch. I have succeeded too in preparing it in different ways. Today’s home-made chocolate recipe is one among those.
Raksha Bandhan is a beautiful celebration back in Indian subcontinent which is celebrated on the Full moon day of ‘Shravana’ month of the Hindu calendar. It is mostly celebrated as a festival of love and bonding between a brother and a sister wherein the sister ties a Rakhi on her brother’s wrist praying for his well-being and prosperity and in return, the brother along with a small token of love, promises to safeguard her for life.
Well, a small set of people, also do observe this as a celebration of brotherhood among the fellow citizens.
This Raksha Bandhan, surprise your dear ones with customized gifts – Home-made chocolates, the VeggiePotNPan way!

Eggless Choco-Coco Cake
Total time: 75 minutes
Preparation time: 10 minutes
Cooking time: 5 minutes
Setting time: 60 minutes
Servings: 40 pieces
Main Ingredients:
Cocoa powder: 3/4th cup
Powdered sugar: 1 cup
Coconut oil: 3/4th cup
Milk Powder: 3/4th cup
Method :
- Powder the sugar. (I have coarsely powdered it here, as I love the granulated texture that the coarsely powder sugar gives to the chocolate. You may opt to finely powder it or use finely powdered sugar instead)
- Sieve the cocoa powder and milk powder together. Mix it with powdered sugar. Mix using a spatula or a spoon
- In a vessel, bring about 1 cup of water to boil and simmer it
- Keep a glass bowl over this vessel and transfer the coconut oil to this bowl
- Let the coconut oil heat in the indirect heat. Once it is hot enough transfer the dry mixture to this and stir continuously using a spatula or a hand blender. See to it that it is lump free
- Remove from heat, once the chocolate mixture is lump free
- Pour it to the silicon chocolate moulds (or any chocolate mould that you have. You may even use your ice-trays if you don’t have the chocolate moulds with you)
- You may use your creativity in this. You may use dry fruits / nuts / tutty fruity / jam or whatever you are very fond of, inside the chocolate. Here, I have sandwiched kishmish in part of the chocolate
- Freeze it for about 1 hour
- Take out of the freezer after an hour (or once it sets) and unmould the chocolate
- Serve and relish as is or preserve it for future use. It is a good idea to wrap it with chocolate wrapper if you are preserving it. It is also a great idea to wrap it if you are planning to present it to your loved ones
Note :
- Finely powdered sugar is used in chocolate making more often than not. Here, for a change, I have used, coarsely powdered sugar as it gives a different experience of relishing a chocolate.
- Chocolate making is an art. You can alter the contents once you get a knack of it. I have made chocolates using butter several times, but this time, for a change, I used coconut oil and it still tastes amazing !!!
- You may refrigerate or freeze the chocolate for setting. The time required changes, depending on what you opt for.
- Covering chocolate with wrapper increases its shelf life. So if you want to preserve the chocolates, it is advisable to wrap it. Chocolate wraps are available in almost all supermarkets and retail stores. Wrapping should be done softly and carefully as these wrappers are very delicate and tear off easily, if not handled carefully
- You can use any moulds for setting the chocolate. I prefer silicon moulds as it is easier to unmould with it, without breaking the chocolate
Home-made chocolate stories:
In one of my previous companies, I had a set of friends – the like-minded ones. Come festivals or any special events, we had our own customised way of celebrating them – off office work!!! We used to share our knowledge, likes, interests and gift each other with some customised gifts. One such gift that I received from a friend of mine was a box full of double embossed heart-shaped home-made chocolates neatly wrapped in red coloured chocolate wrapper. Wow, I loved the presentation as well as the taste of the chocolate. From that day, I started to learn and make home-made chocolates in different ways.
Really very nice
